SCRAP Eco Audits & Excursions

In 1994, SCRAP conducted the first known school-based, solid waste audit at Holsworthy HS with student participation. The NSW EPA was present and provided its imprimatur to the method. Since then SCRAP has conducted over 150 such audits across NSW and ACT schools as well as many professional audits for business, state and local government bodies and other non-profits. What we find is that with a change of attitude and systems, most organisations can begin to move rapidly towards Zero Waste. We have been advocating that for the past 25 years and current thinking supports our long held views. For reasonable cost, your organisation can begin this transition, saving money and the environment as you do.

From around 2000 on, SCRAP worked with other environmental organisations to devise the first Sustainable Schools Program in NSW. Based around the EcoSnapshot Day we have attended almost 100 schools, providing hands-on experience for students and teachers of simple auditing procedures in the aspects of – energy, water, biodiversity and grounds, purchasing and materials management as well as solid waste. At least five groups of up to 25 students each partake in the activities over one school day discovering details of the school’s actual environmental impact (ecological footprint). These activities are available as a package or as individual one-off audits according to need.
With environmental education continuing to feature in the thinking of schools and most other organisations there is no starting point better than benchmarking your performance from the outset and SCRAP has 20 years of experience to offer in assisting you to do it.
