About our Calculators

Solid Waste - SCRAP's method of auditing solid waste involves separating the waste into various categories and then weighing those categories in order to obtain data on just what is being thrown out, how much waste is being created, and to make recommendations on how to reduce the amount of waste being created.

Clicking on the link to the solid waste calculator will automatically download an Excel spreadsheet which has the different categories listed. If you have conducted your own audit, you can fill in the weights for each cateogory and the spreadsheet will calculate the totals. You can use these totals to see what sort of items are most prevalent in your waste and take steps to reduce them, through such methods as avoiding, reducing, re-using and recycling.

Greenhouse Gas - All electrical appliances in your school or office use energy and create greenhouse gases. These gases enter the atmosphere and add to the greenhouse affect and global warming. Counting the number of appliances such as light fittings, computers, heaters, fridges, radios etc, and estimating the number of hours each week that they would be in use, you can use this calculator to find out the consumption per kilowatt hour and the amount of greenhouse gases created per item. Once this has been established, you can work out which items are the highest energy consumers and changes can be made to reduce your power consumption. Changes can be simple, such as remebering to switch off the lights when out of a room and applicances when not in use, or you could also replace light fittings with energy efficient globes.
